Firewise

Firewise means that we know how to act if there is a fire. One of the most important messages for children is, "Don't play with matches or lighters." We learnt that everyone needs smoke alarms at home and families need to plan in advance for a safe meeting place in case there is a fire. If the smoke alarm goes off we have to Get Down, Get Low, Get Out Fast! 
We made a mural to show what we have to do.

The Annunciation

Our new Religious Education Strand is The Communion of Saints. In Year one we are learning about Mary the Mother of Jesus. Lesson 1 was about the Annunciation, when the Angel Gabriel came to tell Mary that God wanted her to be the mother of his son, Jesus. We acted out the parts with the boys being the Angel Gabriel and the girls being Mary. We learnt a song called Mary said, "Yes" and we also learnt to sing the Hail Mary. 

Get Ready Week

In the first week of Term 4 it was Get Ready Week. We read 'Is That An Earthquake?' for our shared book and learnt about what to do if there was an earthquake.  On Friday the whole school had an earthquake drill so we could practise what we had learnt.

Cherry Blossom Cup Cakes

To celebrate spring we made cherry blossom cup cakes. We googled lots of photos of cherry blossom. We spread pink icing on our pink cup cakes and then made blossom decorations with little pink and white marshmallows. The best part was when we ate them. They were delicious.

Pumanawa Weaving Group

Room 2 had a weaving group for Pumanawa. Everyone had their own loom and we learnt to weave using different coloured wool. It was tricky to learn the pattern of weaving over and under each thread across the loom. When we had finished we made pompoms to hang from the bottom of our weaving panel. Now they are ready to hang up at home.

Blubber Experiment

In Room 2 we found out that animals in Antarctica, like penguins, have blubber under their skins. Blubber is fat. We did an experiment to see if blubber helps to keep penguins warm. 

What does blubber do?

For the experiment we needed fat, ice, and rubber gloves.

We used vegetable fat inside a glove for one hand and our bare hand in the other glove. We put them both into icy water and waited to see which hand got cold first.

 We all found our hand covered in fat

 did not get cold. We learnt that

 blubber helps Antarctic animals stay

 warm in freezing temperatures.
