Matariki

Matariki is the name for Maori New Year. It is celebrated in late May or early June when the new moon has risen. Matariki is also the name of a group of stars that can be seen at that time. We read about Matariki and wrote about what people do to celebrate Matariki. Please come to Room 2 to see our Matariki mural.

Making Siapo - Tapa Cloth

Talofa,
During Samoan Language Week we drew Samoan patterns onto brown paper with a vivid. Next we painted our patterns with brown dye. Finally we scrunched up the paper until it was soft. Now we have our own tapa cloth called ‘siapo’.

Samoan Language Week

Talofa! In Week 5 it was Samoan Language Week. We enjoyed reading Samoan stories and learning to siva the Samoan way. We all danced while Aisling played her ukulele and Adam played the pate. We read Lavalava for our shared book and published our stories about where we would wear a lavalava. Making our own tapa cloth was very exciting and we will post about that when it is finished. Counting Back in Room 2

In Room 2 we have been learning to count forwards and backwards every day. We have found that counting forwards is much easier than counting backwards. We made kites and wrote the numbers counting backwards. One group wrote numbers back from 10-1, one group wrote numbers back from 20-11 and another group wrote numbers back from any 2 digit number. We had lots of fun making our kites.
