The Treaty of Waitangi - Te Tiriti O Waitangi

Last week Room 1 and 2 discussed the Treaty of Waitangi and why it is important to all of us in New Zealand.
We looked at old historical pictures of the Treaty of Waitangi signing back in 1840.  The children then had fun re-enacted the signing of The Treaty of Waitangi.  The children chose to either get into character as an English settler or as a member of the Maori that would have been present on February 6th, 1840 in Waitangi.

The children took turns at signing the document with a feather and ink.  We also discussed why the Treaty was signed in the first place. It was signed so that the English and Maori could live together in partnership under the Queens protection and to live in harmony in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
